New York State Department of Transportation's Gowanus Expressway Viaduct Rehabilitation Wins Two Prestigious Industry Awards for Innovative Methodologies

SAN FRANCISCO, CA. May, 2011 – Field Automated Communication Systems, LLC (FACS) today announced that the New York State Department of Transportation’s Gowanus Expressway Viaduct Rehabilitation Project has won the 2010 ASCE Met Section Construction Achievement and the 2011 ASHE Project of the Year awards. Innovative methodologies used in both the design and construction phases contributed to the constructability of the project, and to winning these prestigious awards.

The $152 million project was focused on emergency repairs and an interim deck replacement, all of which was achieved while carrying the expressway’s full traffic load every day for over four years.  The Gowanus Expressway is a vital regional link carrying an average daily traffic volume of 200,000 vehicles per day (AADT). It provides a bypass around New York City for a high volume of trucks from Long Island, New Jersey and other locations. This 4.4 mile section of I-278 received 500,000 square feet of new concrete decking. Because it was necessary to maintain normal traffic volume during the project, an innovative concrete mix and the means to monitor its strength were developed and employed.

FACS Project Controller™ was selected to improve cost controls and to enable real-time information-sharing among all project personnel on the Gowanus Expressway Viaduct Rehabilitation Project. FACS Project Controller was an important factor in keeping this publicly-funded project on-budget. Additionally, the FACS Anywhere™ ruggedized, wireless tablet PCs provided continuous field-to-office communication. Employing a patented synchronization technology, FACS solutions allowed the project team to work unimpeded in the field, with or without an internet or cellular connection. With FACS Project Controller all contract documents, plans, specifications and manuals were accessed by the project team wirelessly, which improved communication, minimized the need for paper and reduced the carbon footprint of the project.
“FACS is proud to have worked with the New York State Department of Transportation, DeFoe Corporation, AECOM and our teaming partner, HAKS Engineering, on this complex and significant project.  Our solution was the right tool for the right job, allowing a large and dispersed project team to communicate effectively and to make optimum use of valuable resources,” said Daryn Reif, CEO at Field Automated Communication Systems.
