To some, discovering new technology is akin to crossing the English Channel or using a toothpick to aid your climb up Mt. Kilimanjaro.  Getting used to a new office technology or software isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.  For most, it feels daunting.  When a new technology is introduced, outcries are heard around the room: “What was wrong with the way we’ve beendoing it?!”

You may have seen a poster with this saying around your elementary or middle school: “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always gotten.”  Technology is there to challenge and to push us to succeed more.  Though daunting at first, it has a way of eventually making our lives easier.  Of course, there isn’t anything inherently wrong with the way you’ve been doing it, but think of how much easier life could be if everyone stepped out of their comfort zone to try new tools.

The Best Ways to Overcome Tech Resistance:

Communicate

The most important step to overcoming resistance to technology is communication.  Communicate with your employees and co-workers early and often.  Let them know ahead of time that things are going to be changing.  Allow them enough time to research the change that is about to take place.  Along the way, update them on important dates for training and implementation.  An informed audience will be less agitated than one that feels surprised or undermined.

Highlight the Benefits

New technologies almost always come with perks.  They can make tasks easier, communication more efficient and reduce time spent on everyday tasks.  As you communicate with your team, don’t fail to address what’s in it for them.  They might be able to see past the changes if they understand the benefits the technology will provide them.

Involvement

Allow employees to voice their opinions.  If employees feel involved in the technology or software selection process, they’ll be more apt to buy in and get others around them to buy in.  Make sure your office environment is positive by asking questions and addressing real concerns.  Consider choosing a few employees to aid in the technology selection process, further securing a buy-in.

Acceptance

Come to terms with the fact that not everyone will love your decision.  However, do not let this dissuade you from implementing the new technology. Though there are sure to be a few difficulties along the way, remind your team of the benefits and continue communicating throughout the incubation period.

Implementing these key strategies will help your team utilize current technology to preform their jobs as easily as possible.
